It hit me at some point while I was looking through my music collection that several artists had the same song title – “Save Me”. I explore each one here:
Jem – I don’t know a lot about this artist but I heard this version on “Grey’s Anatomy”. The music they select for the show hits the mark about 90% of the time (in my estimation) and this song was one of those times. I don’t remember the scene that was going on while the music was playing but I remember trying to look for it afterwards. Luckily, this is one of those shows that is not shy about advertising what music is playing during the episodes – in fact they list the songs on their website. I like the bouncy, reggae feel it has. It has overtones of seriousness and playfulness all at the same time. Seriously!
p.s. – did not know what Jem looked like until I went searching for the picture. Wow! Doubly impressed.
Dave Matthews – For some reason, Dave Matthews put out a solo album called “Some Devil” a few years back. To my ear, it didn’t sound much different than a Dave Matthews Band album. Okay, maybe a bit darker and more intense but Dave Matthews has a definite musical style that cannot be ignored. His version almost sounds like he wants someone to save him from himself, but he just wants to get back home.
Aimee Mann – When I hear this song, I get an image in my mind of a ghostly version of Aimee playing guitar against a black background. There is a quality about her voice, a lilt, which is very evocative. She recorded this song for the “Magnolia” soundtrack (or maybe she just lent it, I don’t know), which is a film that has its own issues. “Like Peter Pan or Superman you will come to save me…” Yes, Aimee… your voice certainly carries.
k.d. lang – I bought “Ingenue” when it came out based on the strength of “Constant Craving”. She won the Grammy for best female vocals that year. No more apparent is her sultry voice than on this track of the album. The whole album is fantastic but she does her soulful best on this track (and maybe “Wash Me Clean”). It ambles along being held together with a nice pedal-steel guitar that sounds less ‘country’ and more ‘guideline’. Of course, she’s from Canada so which country are we talking about?
